The Secret Of Understanding Children

It was a day that I will forever be etched into my being. My husband was out of town visiting his mother and I was parenting my two extraordinary children solo. After three days of embracing high drama, soothing explosive emotions, and relaxing righteous indignation, I was exhausted.

Feeling both physically and emotionally drained I put my children to bed and sat down to meditate and pray. As I melted into the silence I was surrounded by a blissful connection to the creator. I felt my life force reignite and my energy restored. In my mind I asked God what I needed to learn to parent my children. The guidance that followed was surely a message from every child. I share these words to help you see the beauty and the innocence in your children. Here are the words that were shared with me.

When you look at me

Remember how small I really am
Remember how I make you feel when I hug you
Remember how I can melt your heart with love

When you lose your patience

Remember, my hands need to explore
Remember, my mind needs to ask questions

Remember, my soul needs your attention

When the world seems overwhelming

Remember to teach me about God's love
Remember to teach about kindness to others
Remember to teach me that I can make a difference in this world

When we are together

Remember to laugh with me
Remember to cry with me
Remember to celebrate life with me

When we disagree

Remember, I have lessons to learn
Remember, you have lessons to learn also
Remember, I am a blessing

But most importantly at every moment
Remember how very much I love you

Enjoy your children and the wonderful gifts they bring into your life.

Friends Are A Gift You Give Yourself
My oldest boy is fifteen and was a real jerk about a month ago. He had gotten pretty full of himself and acted like he was too cool for the rest of the family. Pretty typical teenager behavior, but I didn't like it. I had gotten to the end of my patience with him and laid into him about how lousy it felt to be treated that way. We ended up in a huge fight. He argued that he wasn't acting any different than normal and that I was just choosing to see things negativel...(related: Parenting)

A parent writes in, ``We are having a hard time in our family deciding on appropriate punishments when our teen-ager breaks family rules. We can't tell if we are too strict or too lenient. Questions about appropriate punishment and consequences are very important. Now notice, if you will, that I just said punishment and consequences, not just punishment. This is because I believe there is an important distinction to be made. The difference has to do with what our goal is in responding to unacceptable and...(related: Parenting)

Scolding: One Of Communications Tools Of Last Resort
(Excerpted from Jim Rohn's 2004 Weekend Leadership Event)You have to be very careful of scolding. Scolding, as a last resort, may be necessary but you must be very careful. Scolding someone is like giving them a cut, giving them a small cut with your words on the hand. Maybe it will serve its purpose, and the cut will heal and everything will be okay. You needed to get their attention. But you must not do it everyday, all the time. Some children end up with psychological scars because they have been cut (scolded) everyday. Scold, scold everyday and they wind up psychologically disadvantaged because of that kind of treatment. Because somebody has the words, but words that are cruel; ...(related: Parenting)

Revering The Crayon Marks
"Do not think that love, in order to be genuine, has to be extraordinary. How Effective Is The Nutraceutical Attend With Adhd?

I really like all natural remedy for Attention Deficit Disorder called ATTEND, and the other Nutraceutical products made by VAXA International in Tampa, FL.

In fact, I spent nearly two years studying the effectiveness of ATTEND on children and adults with ADHD. It was a big undertaking, but was well worth the effort. At the beginning of the study, I was very skeptical about the effectiveness of anything other than stimulants and therapy. However, as time...(related: Parenting)

Teaching Preschool Color And Shapes With Family Games
My kids just can't get enough of playing games with Mom and Dad--can yours?Sometimes we all take a break in the middle of the day and play a game together. Most of the time, I just make sure we play games so that we all have fun together. I can get so caught up in things that I'll go from one task to the next and forget to have a little fun.Today, after several pleas from my kids, I got out the Uno cards. Today I would be playing with six-year-old Ryan and three-year-old Maegan. In the past, Maegan would sit on my lap and help me with my cards; but today, she wanted to be her "own team"."Yep," she answered and put down a yellow card on top of the pile.Round and round we went, with Maegan putting d...(related: Parenting)

Goal Setting For Kids
Goal setting is essential for building a successful life. However, teaching kids how to set and achieve goals is not part of most school curriculums, nor is it taught in most homes. Many parents never learned the techniques of goal setting, and are still struggling with their own. You don't need to know it all. While you develop your own goal-setting skills, you can also be helping and encouraging your children to develop theirs. Goal setting is a life-long skill. It helps your child to focus their unique gifts and talents, it helps to cultivate and strengthening your child's self-worth, and equips them to lead a life full of meaning purpose, and direction, regardless of the professional or personal paths...(related: Parenting)
