Parenting Your Teenager: What Teens Say About Parents
|
|
What's hard for teenagers
Having people who don't understand you trying to control you.
Parents not understanding the things you have to deal with.
Having to deal with school.
Being accepted by friends.
Having someone really close to you leave you.
Being blamed for almost everything because we are teen-agers.
Living with divorced parents and having no say in where you go.
Dealing with boy/girl friends.
Trying to deal with a parent who doesn't want to understand and take time to listen to your comments.
Not being financially independent.
Meeting parents' expectations and never being good enough.
Knowing your parents are right.
What's best about being a teen
Getting away with immature behavior.
The chance to try new things.
Having your whole life ahead of you.
Youth, energy and time.
Lots to look forward to.
Getting a driver's license
Almost being done with school.
Friends and relationships.
Not having to work.
Summer vacation.
What parent's don't understand
Our schedules and our social lives.
That restrictions don't work and talking does.
We're old enough to make our own choices.
We need to have our freedom every once in a while.
That we make mistakes just like they did.
Grades aren't the only thing I'm good for; I can make you proud by just being me!!
We love you even if you aren't around.
Threats make me fear you, not respect you.
What the world is like now, not what it was like when they were kids.
We have feelings, too.
Their words can hurt really badly.
It really is hard to live in a family where your opinion doesn't count.
We understand trust isn't cheap but we have to learn some things for ourselves.

Parenting---roots And Wings
I'm sure many of you have heard that old Hallmark card adage that goes something like this: Parents give their children two great gifts---one is roots, the other is wings. This is what I address in this article. As parents, we pray for our children's safety, health and happiness. We do everything we know to help make these things happen for them.At some point in our lives, we developed the principles and values that guide our life decisions. Our parents and/or caregivers certainly had influence over this but not complete determination. Some of us gladly adopted the values of...(related: Parenting)
Are You Reading To Your Kids?
Over a number of years there have been issues raised concerning the literacy levels of eight year old children in schools. The number not meeting minimum literacy levels was almost at 30% only a few years ago. It has since improved but is still a concern to teachers and parents alike. It seems the desire for consumer goods and pressure for both parents to maintain employment is robbing our next generation of the precious time spent nuturing them with stories and preparing them for school. Reading only three stories a day to preschool children would probably have them excelling once they reached school age and almost wipe out the issue of illiteracy in our schools in years to come.Children who are read to as a part of their everyday life understand the simplest aspects of reading. Concepts like reading from left to right, that text and ...(related: Parenting)

The Cost Of Competition On Kids
The subject of competition is one that provokes some pretty strong feelings in the United States. In fact, even hinting that competition might not be such a great thing can cause one to be labeled un-American.The prevailing belief is that competition is good for everyone ? that someone without a strong competitive nature is just a wimp. That being competitive is human nature and to be noncompet...(related: Parenting)
Fuzzy Names, Sweet Names
As with everything, names go through cycles of change with passing generations. I also tend to think that names have improved immensely since the first Elmas, Minervas, Bufords, and Alfreds graced the baby's room wearing appropriate nametags on their cribs.A country of tradition, we still hold tightly to such commoners as Becky, Wendy, Mike and Bill. And being the trendsetters of a diverse time, we also like originality. Girls are acquiring sophistication with names such as Breanna and Kyla while boys are being called Dusty and Cameron, cute yet charming. I do like these names. I even think that the not-so-unique ones are fine. These names have humility an...(related: Parenting)
Teach Your Children - Without Them Knowing They Are Learning!
The great thing about children is they absorb knowledge like a sponge. The downside to this is that they are typically wise to the fact that they don't want to sit down and be taught, fortunately as parents we can think of ways around that! Here are some great ideas of ways to promote learning with your children.Read with your child, or better yet, take turns reading to each other. One-on-one reading is less common at schools and your child will benefit from having the extra practice time. Try to keep the books at the same reading level as your child is at, or one step below. The goal is to make it a pleasurable and relaxing experience and in doing so there is a greater chance that they will read as a hobby and not just when it is require...(related: Parenting)

Childhood Obesity
Economist John Kenneth Galbraith has said that more people die in this country of too much food than of too little. It's an appalling notion - but an accurate one. As of 1999 more than 60 percent of American adults were overweight or obese - and obesity among children was increasing faster than among adults. In 2000, 22 percent of U.S. preschoolers were overweight and 10 percent clinically obese.Nevertheless, there a...(related: Parenting)
